Leave a Legacy Month:
Celebrating our Legacy Donors
What does leaving a legacy mean to you? For our community of legacy donors, it means shaping the future of healthcare through planned giving. Donors who left a gift to the University Hospital Foundation (UHF) in their will have already accomplished incredible things, including bringing the very best brain care to Edmonton. Their contributions have allowed us to advance Gamma Knife radiosurgery, provide state-of-the-art stroke care and so much more.
Every donation has a ripple effect in the health ecosystem in Alberta and beyond. Donors who leave a gift in their will add to that ripple effect, extending change and the opportunity for better health into the future. The donations given to the UHF means a better future, and potential cures, for people with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, organ failure and multiple sclerosis, to name a few of our current campaigns.
Leaving a donation in your will creates a legacy of health and generosity – in your name
Over the past five years alone, donors who have included the University Hospital Foundation in their will have committed $14,500,000.
While the reason a donor plans a charitable gift into their will varies – perhaps in memory of a loved one, or in gratitude for care provided at the University of Alberta Hospital, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and Edmonton Kaye Clinic – there are several personal benefits to doing this, including:
- Charitable gifts in your will can offset income taxes to your family.
- Like planting a seed that sprouts a flower in the weeks to come, a gift in your will allows you to extend your vision of the community into the future.
- By determining where and how you want your finances and estate to support the community, you are honouring the values you hold as important beyond your passing.
Gold Leaf Society
At the University Hospital Foundation, we celebrate donors who have designated a donation gift in their will to the UHF through our Gold Leaf Society. Established in 2021, the Gold Leaf Society is our community of donors. Along with ensuring donors’ gifts will never be forgotten, the UHF offers members special access to behind-the-scene tours of parts of the hospital rarely seen by the public, such as the intra-operative MR surgical suite – one of the very few of its kind in North America, and the Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre at the University of Alberta Hospital. Members also have the opportunity to hear presentations from some of our world-leading healthcare teams.
“The Gold Leaf Society was born of the University Hospital Foundation’s desire to celebrate our donors and their meaningful decision to continue to support medical care and innovation through their wills,” explained Director of Philanthropy, Caroline Thompson. “We recognize these donors and their incredible commitment to the advancement of health care by sharing impact reports and invitations to exclusive events, making every effort to demonstrate the ways we responsibly allocate funds in the most impactful way possible. That way, our Gold Leaf Society members have an idea of the countless lives that will be impacted by their generosity.”
Designating a charitable gift is easy and the UHF can help you
In November of 2021, the UHF presented a seminar on estate planning, featuring legal and financial planning experts Baerach Anderson and Rob Campbell, and special guests, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Keith Aronyk, and grateful patient and Gold Leaf Society Member, Cathy Housdorff. You can view the seminar below, and on our YouTube channel.

Leave a Legacy Month
For many, May is the month of brilliant and warm sunny spring days, planting seeds and thinking of the warm days on the horizon. For our Gold Leaf Society members and so many donors across the country, it is also Leave a Legacy Month.
Licensed to the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, Leave a Legacy Month is an opportunity for nonprofits and charities to talk about the place and vital importance planned giving has to their organizations. While there are a wide variety of ways to donate and support a nonprofit, establishing a gift in one’s will is a less known but just as impactful way to inspire change past your lifetime.
