What does leaving a legacy mean to you? For our community of legacy donors, it means shaping the future of healthcare through planned giving. Donors who left a gift to the University Hospital Foundation (UHF) in their will have already accomplished incredible things, including bringing the very best brain care to Edmonton. Their contributions have allowed us to advance Gamma Knife radiosurgery, provide state-of-the-art stroke care and so much more.
Every donation has a ripple effect in the health ecosystem in Alberta and beyond. Donors who leave a gift in their will add to that ripple effect, extending change and the opportunity for better health into the future. The donations given to the UHF means a better future, and potential cures, for people with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, organ failure and multiple sclerosis, to name a few of our current campaigns.
Over the past five years alone, donors who have included the University Hospital Foundation in their will have committed $14,500,000.
While the reason a donor plans a charitable gift into their will varies – perhaps in memory of a loved one, or in gratitude for care provided at the University of Alberta Hospital, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and Edmonton Kaye Clinic – there are several personal benefits to doing this, including:
Gold Leaf Society
At the University Hospital Foundation, we celebrate donors who have designated a donation gift in their will to the UHF through our Gold Leaf Society. Established in 2021, the Gold Leaf Society is our community of donors. Along with ensuring donors’ gifts will never be forgotten, the UHF offers members special access to behind-the-scene tours of parts of the hospital rarely seen by the public, such as the intra-operative MR surgical suite – one of the very few of its kind in North America, and the Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre at the University of Alberta Hospital. Members also have the opportunity to hear presentations from some of our world-leading healthcare teams.

Leave a Legacy Month
For many, May is the month of brilliant and warm sunny spring days, planting seeds and thinking of the warm days on the horizon. For our Gold Leaf Society members and so many donors across the country, it is also Leave a Legacy Month.
Licensed to the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, Leave a Legacy Month is an opportunity for nonprofits and charities to talk about the place and vital importance planned giving has to their organizations. While there are a wide variety of ways to donate and support a nonprofit, establishing a gift in one’s will is a less known but just as impactful way to inspire change past your lifetime.
