What do the words “hope is here” mean to you?
If you know someone who has received life-saving care at the University of Alberta Hospital, I suspect those words will have a deeply personal meaning. You may even nod your head as you read them, as if to express your agreement.
If you are a doctor, researcher or staff member who works at one of the many buildings at the University of Alberta Hospital, you are the reason or conduit for that hope. You may feel a sense of pride and accomplishment — as you should.
And if you are a donor to the University Hospital Foundation, or one of our corporate or strategic partners, supporting strides in research, care and prevention, you should know that hope is HERE because of you.
What does that hope look like? I am so glad you asked.
This issue of HERE magazine has it all, including our first ever illustrated story (page 11) that tells a narrative, in unique format, about kidney disease.
We profile some of the people who fund the work of our amazing health teams at the hospital and researchers at the University of Alberta, including Harold Roozen (page 18); Kim Mihalcheon of Steel-Craft Door Products (page 30); and representing the next generation of philanthropic leaders in our community, Ken Rosenau, Rachel Edwards and Daniel Charbonneau (page 8).
There is a feature on the music, poetry, paintings and interactive activities that make the University Hospital Foundation’s Arts in Health one of the leading programs of its kind in North America.
Included in the article are dazzling photographs of some of the artwork in our 2,000-plus piece art collection, and two inspiring stories from hospital patients who not only benefited from the presence of art in the hospital, but upon reflection, see it as a springboard to their recovery.
