Did you know that here in Alberta, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and the second leading cause of death in Canada after cancer?

Now imagine a world where heart attacks are rare. Where cardiovascular disease is as easy to treat as a papercut. Heart attacks are a thing of the past.

That is the world the University Hospital Foundation (UHF) is working towards. It is the inspiration behind Heart Month. This year, we are excited to welcome Freson Bros. as the presenting sponsor of Heart Month. Family owned and operated since 1955, Freson Bros. is dedicated to providing Albertans with the freshest food, convenient options, and healthy choices.

For the entire month of February, the UHF focuses fundraising efforts on bringing the community together, including healthcare professionals, physicians, researchers and patients of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (Maz), to raise awareness and support for the life-saving work done at the Maz every day.

The Maz, located in Edmonton and integrated with the University of Alberta is one of the very few heart institutes to accommodate both adult and pediatric patients. As a world leader in complex cardiac care, the heart institute’s team of highly skilled cardiac care professionals, researchers and educators, advance the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular health for our communities.
