Cardiac care in Alberta to receive $498,818 and counting

Donors to the University Hospital Foundation’s Heart Month meet event with outpouring of generosity

Edmonton, AB – March 1, 2024

In a remarkable display of community spirit, donors rallied together to contribute more than $498,818 during this year’s Heart Month campaign, presented by Freson Bros. and orchestrated by the University Hospital Foundation (UHF). This year’s month-long fundraiser, culminating on Heart Pledge Day on up! 99.3, presented by Popeye’s Supplements Canada continued to spotlight the need for awareness and funding in the ongoing battle against heart disease.

“During this extraordinary month, our community has spoken from the heart, making a difference in the fight against heart disease,” shared Dr. Jodi Abbott, President and CEO of the University Hospital Foundation. “The support we’ve received echoes a commitment to cardiovascular health that will reverberate far beyond these 29 days.”

Throughout February, Albertans engaged in heart-themed local promotions and events, including the Maz Move-A-Thon, an initiative organized by the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute staff, which encouraged individuals to get moving for a cause close to their hearts.

Fundraising efforts came to a head on Heart Pledge Day with an all-day radio event. Uniting listeners from across western Canada, this 12-hour event provided a platform for inspirational stories from patients, physicians, researchers and the healthcare professionals of the Maz. The stories shared shed light on the challenges faced by those affected by heart-related issues but also underscored the groundbreaking work of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

“As a cardiac patient, I am living proof of the impact these efforts can have on individuals and families,” remarked Karl Sacca, cardiac patient at the Maz and Heart Pledge Day interview guest.

The University Hospital Foundation extends gratitude to all who have played a part in making this Heart Month a resounding success. Together, we are making strides toward a heart-healthy future.
