Edmonton, AB – March 5, 2026
The University Hospital Foundation is proud to announce that, over the past year, the community has come together to raise $2.9 million to support cardiac advancements and care, including $450,000 raised during this year’s Heart Month campaign, presented by Freson Bros.
These funds will directly support the advancement of cardiac disease prevention through partnerships and programs such as Heartway™ and Caring for our Hearts, as well as cardiac care and life-saving technology, including future upgrades to the Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room at the University of Alberta Hospital’s Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (the Maz).
The month-long campaign included four live,
on-location broadcasts with hosts from up! 99.3 and 102.3 NOW radio. Two were
hosted at the Maz, coinciding with the Made from the Heart Craft and Bake Sale and
the high-energy Maz Spin-a-Thon. The Spin-A-Thon was presented by Popeyes
Supplements Canada, in partnership with the University of Alberta Hospital’s
Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Mayor Andrew Knack and members of the
Edmonton Elks and Edmonton Riverhawks joined the Maz Spin-a-Thon participants (of
which there were 12 teams) for a turn on the bikes. In an impressive display of
endurance, participant and physiotherapist Natalie Shanahan successfully
spun for the full 12-hour duration to help drive donations. Two of the
on-location broadcasts were also held in the community, hosted by Trail
Appliances and Volvo of Edmonton respectively.

Heart Month was made possible by the generous support of our sponsors, including Freson Bros., Popeye’s Supplements Canada, Angus Watt Advisory Group at National Bank Financial, Chemco, Makloc Buildings and Construction, Trail Appliances and Volvo of Edmonton.
While Heart Month is over for another year, the need for life-saving cardiac care continues for thousands of patients who rely on care at the University of Alberta Hospital’s Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Donations to support heart health can be made year-round.
You can make a difference for cardiac care in Alberta by supporting the work of the University Hospital Foundation all year long.
