A gift in memory The Scott Family's Donation

The loss of a loved one is always a difficult experience, but the care and compassion patients and their families receive can make all the difference and provide some comfort during a distressing time. The Scott family had these thoughts on their minds when they decided to make a memorial gift in honour of their late father and husband, Ron, to the University Hospital Foundation.

Ron Scott was a patient at the University of Alberta Hospital in Unit 5F3 when he unfortunately passed away while receiving care. Following Ron’s passing, his son, Barry Scott, reached out to the University Hospital Foundation to discuss making a gift of $50,000 in memory of his father. The family was grateful to the doctors and staff who had provided Ron with such excellent care and wanted to express their appreciation, while also ensuring future staff, patients and their families receive some added comforts during their time in the hospital.

Barry soon learned how large of an impact these funds could make for staff, patients and their families, while celebrating his father’s life. The Scott family decided to make their memorial gift towards improving patient-family comfort, the hospital environment by enhancing existing work spaces, and education at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Before the donation could be made, Barry sadly passed away unexpectedly. His family decided to fulfill his vision and continue on the path he had started with the University Hospital Foundation. His sister, Shauna Scott, continued to work with the Foundation on the gift.

In April 2019, Ron’s wife, Dorothy Scott (and mother to Shauna and late-son, Barry) presented a cheque to the University Hospital Foundation for $50,000. A portion of the gift went towards the purchase of new recliner chairs, with the goal of increasing family comfort for those visiting loved ones in the Hospital – just like Barry had envisioned.

Shortly thereafter, the Scott family decided to visit Unit 5F3. Their visit evoked many emotions, from sadness to gratitude. “It was difficult to come back to the ward remembering the last time we were there,” acknowledged Shauna. “To not have my brother there with us was incredibly hard, but knowing how happy he would have been to have seen his donation idea from our family come to fruition was comforting.”

Dorothy once again expressed appreciation to the University of Alberta Hospital, specifically to Dr. Peter Laratta and staff for the care they provided her late-husband. This memorial gift from the Scott family was the perfect way to honour the memory of both Ron and Barry, continuing their legacy of caring for others, and inspiring others to do the same.
