Caring for our Hearts

Taking the lead on Alberta’s comprehensive cardiac strategy.

Heart disease remains one of Alberta’s leading causes of death and adds to the province’s most pressing healthcare costs. Yet, there is currently no coordinated strategy to address it.

That’s about to change.

Caring for our Hearts is a bold new step toward better heart health for every Albertan. The University Hospital Foundation is leading the creation of a comprehensive cardiac strategy for Albertans, bringing people together to strengthen prevention, care and recovery across the province. Spanning prevention, diagnosis, treatment and recovery, the new initiative will reduce the devastating impact of heart disease across Alberta.

Why heart health matters.

Albertan’s are more likely to experience heart disease than other Canadians.

Cardiovascular disease rates in Alberta

  • Ischemic heart disease affects 7.18% of Albertans—above the national rate of 6.9%
  • Heart failure impacts 3.41% versus 3.23% nationally
  • Heart attacks occur at a rate of 138 per 100,000, closely aligned with national trends
  • Stroke prevalence is 2.4%, on par with other provinces
  • Hypertension is diagnosed in 24.2%—significantly higher than the national average of 22.3%

Building a healthier future.

The key objectives of Caring for our Hearts are to:

  • reduce cardiac disorders,
  • bring stakeholders together,
  • accelerate innovation, and;
  • build a pathway for cardiac health from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation.

The strategy will identify and prioritize existing initiatives, close critical gaps and expand cardiac care to rural and remote communities.

By approaching heart health the same way Alberta has approached cancer care — with a comprehensive strategy from prevention to recovery — the Foundation aims to amplify impact and improve outcomes across the province.

Your voices will shape this strategy.

Alberta’s comprehensive heart health strategy must be made for every Albertan.
Through hearing your perspectives, Caring for our Hearts will ensure every Albertan has access to the best heart care, from prevention to recovery.

Virtual and in-person engagement sessions will be taking place from January through February, 2026.

Donate

This is your chance to make a difference. Donors to the University Hospital Foundation are helping to build a legacy of cardiac excellence including having raised one of every four dollars it took to build the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Now, you can join us in our goal of improving cardiac health in Alberta through this comprehensive cardiac strategy. Support us in bringing the vision to life.

Project approach, scope and timelines.

Objective

To develop a collaborative, provincial heart health strategy that prevents the development of heart disease, unifies partners, accelerates and amplifies impact and prioritizes equitable access to heart health across all regions of the province.

What we’re doing
  • Conducting broad engagement with individuals, caregivers and family members who have lived experience, as well as community members, health professionals, educators and system leaders. Engagement will be conducted through public surveys, in-person and virtual sessions.
  • Performing focused research on Alberta’s heart health and wellness landscape to systematically gather, analyze and synthesize feedback that will inform and enrich strategy development
  • Engaging a Steering Coalition of cardiac disease prevention and treatment experts and those with lived experience, who will review and examine stakeholder input and cutting-edge research to inform the Caring for our Hearts strategy
  • Developing and publishing the final Caring for our Hearts Strategy to drive action towards improving Albertans heart health
Timeline
This project began in October 2025 and is expected to conclude in May 2026.

Frequently asked questions

The Foundation has been a cornerstone in advancing cardiovascular care in Alberta, contributing one out of every four dollars raised for the Mazankowski Heart Institute. Building on this legacy, the Foundation is now taking the lead in defining a province-wide cardiac strategy. When governments change, priorities can shift—by having the Foundation at the helm, we ensure continuity, sustained momentum and the ability to raise and allocate funds effectively to bring this strategy to life.

PCA and ACA are co-funders of the strategy and actively participate in both the steering coalition and the working group. They help guide development, make day-to-day decisions and monitor progress toward achieving the strategy’s goals.

The steering coalition was designed to bring together a diverse range of expertise and perspectives including clinical leaders, government representatives, academic researchers and patient advocacy voices. This mix ensures decisions are informed by experience across the entire continuum of cardiac care.

We are engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders virtually and in-person to ensure the strategy reflects the needs of all Albertans.

These include:

  • Clinical leadership and cardiac specialists (e.g., cardiologists, nurses, hospital leadership)
  • Primary care and community healthcare providers (family physicians, nurse practitioners, PCN leadership)
  • Government and policy makers (Government of Alberta, PCA, ACA)
  • Academic and research leaders (Libin Institute, Mazankowski Institute, universities)
  • Underserved groups (friendship centres, new immigrant services, rural/remote communities)
  • Allied health and rehabilitation professionals (paramedics, social workers, diagnostics)
  • Patient advocacy and non-profit organizations (Imagine Citizens Network, health foundations)
You can participate in one of three ways:
  • Virtual Engagement: Join one of 7 invite-only virtual sessions on Teams (January 12–27, 2026).
  • In-Person Engagement: Attend an invite-only session in your health corridor (North-West, North-East, Edmonton, Central, Calgary, South-West, South-East) during January 12–27, 2026.
  • Written Engagement: Complete the online survey, available publicly on the University Hospital Foundation, PCA, and ACA websites from December 1, 2025 to January 27, 2026.
