Virtual Expedition:
Organ Transplants

Back to the Future of Organ Transplants
During our next Virtual Expedition, Dr. Evangelos Michelakis will take you on a journey “Back to the Future of Organ Transplants”.
Join us to learn more about how research funded by the University Hospital Foundation may one day bring an end to organ transplant waitlists, making the dream of organ banks a reality.

“Is it possible to induce hibernation in human organs? Of course it is.”
Why Hibernation?
Humans used to hibernate. It is in our genes, but those genes are inactivated by what clinician scientists call an epigenetic mechanism. So the genes are there, but they’ve been silenced.
Evangelos Michelakis and his team of researchers believe there is a way to activate that hibernation machinery that would enable the organs to “live” longer outside the body, giving transplant programs the ability to create organ banks similar to blood banks.
